the groundwork for incorporating in silico New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) into medical device conformity assessment under Regulation (EU) 2017\/745 on medical devices (MDR).<\/p><p>iNAMed addresses the gap between the scientific maturity of AI-based computational toxicology and its still limited use in regulatory processes. The project focuses on transforming validated in silico NAMs into a regulatory-ready approach supported by structured validation, benchmarking and a clear pathway for regulatory integration.<\/p><p>The methodology will be demonstrated using an industrial reference case involving a continuous glucose monitoring sensor for intensive care unit patients. However, their practical application can be limited by data gaps, methodological complexity and the lack of easily accessible digital tools. ECOPILOT addresses these challenges by facilitating sustainability assessments and supporting their alignment with the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework.<\/p><p>The project will help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and innovators streamline assessment processes and generate data that enable more informed ecodesign decisions. EmerGO addresses this challenge by supporting the development and validation of solutions that can help industry better understand pollution-related risks, improve assessment and monitoring processes and implement more effective pollution prevention and reduction strategies.<\/p><p>The project focuses on the food and beverage sector and aligns with European priorities related to Zero Pollution, Food 2030 and the sustainable transformation of industry. The project aims to recover fluorine safely, sustainably and efficiently in the form of stable inorganic fluorides that can be reused as industrial resources, such as fluorspar.<\/p><p>Fluoropolymers are essential to many critical and green technologies, including semiconductors, hydrogen production, fuel cells and electric vehicles. However, options for their treatment and recycling remain extremely limited. Fluorspar is included on the EU list of critical raw materials and is sourced primarily from outside the European Union. Its recycling rate is only 1% due to the lack of suitable technologies.<\/p><p>TriFluorium aims to demonstrate the principle of recycling organofluorine compounds through tribolysis at TRL 3, regardless of their chemical structure, molecular weight or liquid or solid form. The process will take place within a controlled tribocontact zone, where chemical reactions are initiated by mechanical stimuli.<\/p><p>In a single step, tribolysis is expected to break down highly stable organofluorine compounds, including perfluorinated substances, and convert them into stable inorganic products using safe reagents such as alkaline earth metal salts or oxides. The project will also develop a laboratory-scale Tribo-Reactor to validate the technology at TRL 4 and support further process scale-up.<\/p><p>Toxicological assessments and life cycle analyses will also be conducted to comprehensively evaluate the recycling process and the performance of the Tribo-Reactor. This will provide a broader understanding of the sources of the substances being studied, their concentrations and their dispersion patterns.<\/p><p>Importantly, UPRISE will also include a clinical study involving pregnant women exposed to different levels of UFP and MNP pollution. The study will investigate potential modes of action leading to adverse birth outcomes. The project will establish the foundations for a robust, hypothesis-driven Next-Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) framework and support experts in using NAMs data effectively in regulatory decision-making.<\/p><p><strong>Project activities:<\/strong> The project will gather experience from published EFSA case studies and relevant international initiatives, identify existing good practices and develop preliminary recommendations for integrating NAMs data with conventional animal study data and human data, where available. Its main objective is to develop a scientifically robust and regulatorily relevant framework for determining the identity and similarity of nanoforms and justifying their grouping for joint hazard, exposure and risk assessment under REACH.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The consortium combines expertise in nanomaterial synthesis and physicochemical characterisation, toxicology, ecotoxicology, computational modelling, machine learning and artificial intelligence. QSAR Lab leads the consortium and coordinates the development of approaches that integrate experimental and in silico data.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The scope of the framework contract includes expert support concerning the regulatory use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for nanoforms, reviews of available methods and data, identification of knowledge gaps, development or adaptation of testing methods and generation of experimental data where necessary.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The project also includes the development of a tiered NAMs-based testing framework. Tier 1 screening will support the creation of sets of similar nanoforms, while Tier 2 may cover standard information requirements in cases where additional data are needed.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The framework will be evaluated through at least four case studies involving chemically diverse nanoforms. Stakeholder consultations and external scientific reviews will also be conducted to strengthen the quality and regulatory relevance of the results.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The project will provide a practical foundation for more reliable and efficient safety assessment and registration of nanoforms. It considered requirements arising from REACH, the Biocidal Products Regulation, the Cosmetics Regulation and EU legislation concerning food and the food chain, including the applicable animal testing bans for cosmetics and their ingredients.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">QSAR Lab conducted a structured literature review, mapped regulatory-relevant endpoints and surveyed 25 experts representing academia, industry and regulatory institutions. The analysis covered scientific publications, OECD guidance and documents, ISO standards, resources from the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), Standard Operating Procedures, Adverse Outcome Pathways and results from European research projects.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Within the defined scope of the review and based on information collected up to 30 December 2022, 221 NAMs were identified: 8 regulatorily accepted methods specific to nanomaterials, 6 nanomaterial-specific methods undergoing validation, 120 methods under development, 69 accepted methods developed for conventional chemicals and 18 such methods undergoing validation.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The findings revealed a significant gap between method development and regulatory implementation.
